CSIRO was awarded patents in 1992 and 1996 for a method of “unsmearing” the signal, which was eventually utilized in Wi-Fi. In 1997, the first version of the 802.11 standards was published, with link rates of up to 2 Mbit/s. This was modified in 1999 with 802.11b, which allowed for 11 Mbit/s link speeds and was well-received.
